Funding travelling teams with community support and a food fundraiser that’s tasty and easier for busy families in Whitehorse (and beyond!)

This February, our founder Dominique travelled to Whitehorse in the Yukon Territories to support Subzero Volleyball Club on delivery day after their first successful TeamFund fundraiser.

For clubs in the Yukon, fundraising is about much more than extras. It helps make travelling to competitions possible. Subzero athletes regularly travel out of the territory to compete in Alberta. Between flights, hotels, and car rentals, these travel costs can add up quickly for families.

With the Fill Your Freezer fundraiser, families have an opportunity to offset travel costs while stocking up on high-quality, Canadian-made food in bulk.

In particular, they loved the chicken, steaks, and meatballs offered in the fundraiser.

About Subzero Volleyball Club

Subzero Volleyball Club in Whitehorse, Yukon Territories is dedicated to helping young athletes in grades 7-12 develop their skills, teamwork, and confidence through competitive volleyball.

Unlike clubs in larger cities, Subzero Volleyball athletes face a unique challenge. Every meaningful competition requires travel outside of the territory. Teams regularly fly to Alberta to compete in tournaments as part of the Alberta Premier League, giving athletes a chance to test themselves against some of the top teams in the province.

In February 2026, Subzero Volleyball Club ran their first TeamFund Fill Your Freezer Fundraiser, raising $2,253 to help offset travel costs for young athletes.

Common Challenges with Fundraising in Whitehorse

Like many clubs, Subzero also relies on raffles, bottle drives, and silent auctions throughout the year to help keep competition opportunities accessible for families without adding financial strain.

In a city without access to Costco, the Fill Your Freezer gives families the opportunity to purchase grocery staples in larger quantities, something they may not be able to access as easily locally. Instead of selling miscellaneous products people don’t really need, this fundraiser offers food that families are excited to bring home and share.

Fundraising in Whitehorse Helps Yukon Athletes Compete

For Subzero athletes, this fundraiser means more than money raised. It helps create the kind of competition experiences that can change how young athletes see themselves.

With a smaller population in the Yukon, athletes often train and compete in mixed age group practices at home. Travelling to Alberta gives them the chance to face teams in their own age group and measure themselves against some of the top volleyball teams in the province.

At a tournament in early February, the U15 Flying Yeti team won gold in Division 2, defeating top-tier teams from NAIT (Edmonton) and Calgary. Their performance earned them the opportunity to compete in Division 1, the top division in their sport.

For many athletes, these moments can be transformational. Coming from a small community in Northern Canada, they don’t always know how they will measure up until they step on the court and realize: yes, they can compete at the highest level and they belong.

Whitehorse is a growing, community-oriented city where people consistently support one another. That spirit showed up in full force during their Fill Your Freezer fundraiser.

Family, friends, and community members supported the team to show that even in smaller cities, strong community engagement drives real results. 

Together, they were able to raise $2,253 to offset travel costs for their athletes.

Club Spotlight: Spartans Volleyball | Calgary, AB

A strong start powered by early planning, family support, and easy food fundraising for volleyball clubs.

About Spartans Volleyball Club

Spartans Volleyball is a small but mighty volleyball club in Calgary, supporting around 60 players with their programming. As one of the newest clubs partnering with Teamfund, they have already shown what is possible when a community comes together with purpose, enthusiasm, and organization.

While they were new to TeamFund, their first campaign proved they were anything but new to high performance, teamwork, and commitment.

In their first volleyball fundraising campaign, Spartans Volleyball raised over $4,400 with nearly 100% family participation, one of the strongest first-time results we have seen.

Their strategy began in August, recognizing early that this would be a significant travel year for their athletes. Tournaments, out-of-province competitions, and increased team development opportunities meant the club needed to find a solution that could support families while preserving the quality of the athletes’ season

Common Volleyball Fundraiser Challenges

Spartans Volleyball faced unique concerns and challenges when choosing TeamFund:

• A need to raise funds for travel season so they could participate fully in tournaments and out-of-province competitions
• Rising costs for families related to athlete development and team fees
• Concerns about their ability to sell a minimum number of boxes to avoid delivery fees
• Running an optional fundraiser while unsure of how many families would want to participate

Their leadership approached the process with intention, setting the foundation for a strong and engaging campaign well before tryouts began and they had their roster selected.

The early preparation paid off. As tryout season kicked into full swing, coaches made a point of promoting the upcoming fundraiser, building excitement within the club and among families eager to support their athletes.

By the time the Fill Your Freezer campaign opened in early November–immediately following tryouts–the Spartans community was ready.

Together, Spartans Volleyball and TeamFund were able to:

Spartans Volleyball Fundraiser Results

Organizers were surprised by the outcome, despite their dedication and preparation.

While there were early concerns about whether the club could sell 50 boxes, the minimum to get free delivery, families showed up in a big way and they sold 237 boxes in their very first campaign. 

Spartans Volleyball raised $4,400 through our Fill Your Freezer package—one of the strongest first-time outcomes we’ve seen in the region.

Engagement at this level is easier when you have a strong fundraiser like the Fill Your Freezer. Oganizations running a TeamFund campaign for the first time often find themselves coming back again and again with improved results every season!

The Spartans prove that strong community, early preparation, and a fundraiser families actually love can make all the difference.

The success reflects the club’s cohesive culture and the clear communication between coaches, parents, and athletes.

Club Spotlight: Key City Gymnastics | Cranbrook, BC

A standout year fueled by club spirit, family support, and smart fundraising

About Key City Gymnastics

Key City Gymnastics in Cranbrook, BC is home to roughly 350 young athletes, training year-round in a busy, high-energy club environment. Between practices, competitions, and family commitments, their community is always on the go. But this year, they proved just how powerful that community can be.

In 2025, Key City Gymnastics ran two successful TeamFund campaigns, raising a combined $9,010 while strengthening family engagement and building momentum through the Spring and Fall.

Common Gymnastics Fundraising Challenges

Like many large gymnastics clubs, Key City Gymnastics faced familiar fundraising challenges:

• A large membership base with varying schedules and availability
• Limited volunteer time for planning and coordinating traditional fundraisers
• A need for reliable funding to support training, equipment, and athlete development

In June, Key City Gymnastics launched their first TeamFund campaign with the BBQ Meat Fundraiser. From day one, the response was strong.

In Spring, they raised $3,617 in their very first food fundraiser.

The combination of easy ordering, products families actually wanted, and a visible impact on athlete programming created momentum that carried into the Fall season.

So, Key City Gymnastics returned in the Fall, this time with a Fill Your Freezer fundraising campaign and that momentum transformed into even greater support.

Club engagement grew, participation widened, and excitement built across the organization, leading to $5,393 raised in the Fall, surpassing their first campaign. 

One of the key markers of their success is the consistency of club buy-in.

From the earliest planning stages back in the spring, coaches, staff, and families all aligned around the importance of accessible fundraising—especially for a large club with hundreds of athletes and a busy year-round schedule. That unified approach meant that by the time each campaign opened, families were eager, ready, and even excited to participate.

Landing in Halifax: Meeting Our Partners Who Deliver Fundraising in Nova Scotia

Dominique first touched down in Halifax, crossed into Darmouth, and drove through Windsor and several small towns along the way. The warmth and hospitality were remarkable: open, friendly, and full of community spirit.

One highlight was visiting our supplier, Gordon Food Service in Amherst. They have a massive distribution network reaching from Western to Atlantic Canada. With proven success from our partnerships with Gordon Foods in Calgary, Edmonton, and Winnipeg, we are excited to offer these easy and profitable fundraisers in a new area.

Their logistics network ensures that fundraisers in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick get reliable deliveries five days a week, a game-changer for local schools and teams. 

Journeying to New Brunswick: Local Communities 

From Amherst, Dominique drove into New Brunswick, visiting Moncton, Fredericton, and other smaller communities along the way.

Each town had a classic Maritimes’ character – tight-knit, welcoming, and proud of their local programs and sports.

A quick day trip to Shediac during Lobster Fest (eating like a queen!) served a friendliness and pride that made it clear why these communities are such a perfect fit for TeamFund, fundraising people care deeply about supporting one another.

As a Francophone, Dominique was thrilled to connect in French with local organizations in New Brunswick, adding a personal touch to every meeting.
